WildCharge iPhone Review (wireless iPhone Charging)

WildCharge has released an iPhone adapter for it’s wireless charging system. In case you didn’t see our review from the WildCharge launch, here how it works… The system requires two things, a special WildCharge Pad and an adapter for your particular device. Most of the adapters are universal and will allow you connect almost any device. To charge your phone, PDA, and etc you simply place it on the pad. It is almost like magic! This easy system is great for people who hate plugging and unplugging devices. If you get a phone call, simply pick up your cell phone instead of unplugging it.

Having tested – and loved – WildCharge’s wire-free charging system last year, we’re pleased to see that the company has updated their range of “skins” cases to fit the iPhone 3GS. WildCharge allows you to recharge your handset without actually plugging in a cable, similar to the Palm Pre’s Touchstone; when we caught up with WildCharge this week, they confirmed their intentions to move toward broader licensing of their wire-free system.
iPhone Wireless Charger Takes Swipe At Pre Touchstone

Along with the keyboard, there’s one major advantage the Palm Pre has over the iPhone, and that’s the fancy Touchstone wireless charger. Throw the Pre at the desktop pebble and it sticks, via magnetic magic, and charges without a plug. Now, though, that lead has been erased, albeit in a slightly clunky way. WildCharge will sell you a gel-skin for your iPhone or iPod Touch which contains the necessary inductor conductive circuitry to provide the iPhone with power, which itself comes from a large, flat charger pad. The problem with an aftermarket solution is immediately apparent from the picture. It has a nubbin sticking out on the bottom. That, though, mightn’t be a problem for many.
Wireless Charging Comes to iPhone

In less than three weeks, the iPhone has caught up with the Palm Pre in the one area where the Pre held an undisputed lead: wireless charging. The ability to charge without wires is an idea that’s been teasing us for a long time, with Palm the first company (I am aware of) to take it mainstream. The feature will soon be available for iPhone users, too. The iPhone solution, from WildCharge, requires placing the iPhone or iPod touch into a gel skin inductor that looks pretty much like any other form-fitting other case. It includes a small connector that plugs into the iPhone. Once installed, the user places the iPhone onto any WildCharge charger pad and the phone starts charging.

Envious of your Pre toting pals and that Touchstone charging rig? Don’t sweat it — WildCharge is coming through in the clutch to bring similar wireless charging technology to Apple’s own handset. Starting today, iPhone (3G and 3GS included) and iPod touch users can order up a WildCharge Skin along with a WildCharger Pad in order to bring wire-free charging to their smartphone. Just slap the skin on, plug the pad in and toss the handset down on said pad. Just like that, you’ve got fresh energy flowing without having to scour the house for that little AC adapter.

WildCharge’s wireless iPhone charger has two components: the iPhone skin and charge pad. The iPhone skin is placed over the smartphone and is equipped with a contact module that, when put in contact with the charge pad, wirelessly charges the mobile device.
But there’s a difference between the iPhone charger and Palm Pre wireless charger. WildCharge’s product works with more than just a single device. The skin can be applied to BlackBerry, Motorola Razr and iPod Touch devices as well.

One of the cool features that Palm Pre owners could smugly hold over the heads of iPhone owners was its wireless charging system, called the Touchstone, which charged the Pre through a magnetic connection. Not anymore. Today iPhone owners get their own get wireless charging system. The system from WildCharge isn’t quite the same as the Palm’s, which uses electromagnetic inductance to charge. WildCharge uses old-fashioned conductive charging, which means it is wired, sorta, but there’s some cool technology going on there.

The WildCharger is one of those products that creates a problem that you didn’t know you had. Though the product is certainly innovative and it succeeds at charging your cell phone without a wired connection, we never really thought that we needed to do so. What’s more, unless you’re charging more than one handset at a time, we don’t consider it a practical purchase. Yet, WildCharge (the device’s manufacturer) continues to surprise us. In April, it greatly expanded its list of supported phones beyond the now ancient Motorola Razr V3. And on Tuesday, the company expanded that list even more when it announced a charging “skin” for the iPhone.
